ABOUT US

ABOUT CALIFORNIA PIANOS

California Pianos is a full-service piano shop based in Bishop, CA, built around a simple idea: in a remote location far from major cities, you shouldn't have to go far to get great piano service. Founded by Marek Jakubowski, we handle everything - tuning, selling, moving, cleaning, renting, restoring, repairs, humidity control system installation, and piano removal - all under one roof. We focus on quality brands including Steinway, Yamaha, Kawai, and Baldwin, among others. Our showroom at 177 Short St, Unit F features restored instruments that are assessed, regulated, and ready to play before they ever leave the shop. We don't sell junk. Every piano that goes out our door has been properly evaluated and brought up to standard. We also host intimate live performance events, bringing music and community together in a setting that feels personal. While we are rooted in the Eastern Sierra Nevada, we regularly serve clients in Nevada, and in Reno and Los Angeles in particular.

Marek Jakubowski

Marek Jakubowski has been a piano technician since 2022, training and working at restoration shops in Philadelphia, Minnesota, Nevada, and California. A member of the Piano Technicians Guild (PTG), he has also completed the rigorous week-long Shigeru Kawai Concert Piano Preparation Training at the Colburn School of Music - one of the most demanding technical programs available to working technicians. He currently serves as an official contractor for the Colburn School in Los Angeles, where he helps maintain a fleet of over 200 world-class instruments. His work spans concert halls, universities, and festivals - including the Steinway Gallery in Reno, Reno Jazz Festival, Carson City Symphony,  Felici Trio, and the Eastern Sierra Community Chorus - as well as schools, churches, and private clients throughout the Eastern Sierra. Marek's path to piano technology is anything but conventional. After years working in Fire Ecology and Data Visualization, he found himself drawn back to something he had carried since childhood - a natural, deep connection to the piano. The decision to make it a career solidified early in his technical training, when he began delivering instruments to customers for a piano shop and witnessed firsthand the joy a piano brings into a home. He wanted to be part of that experience, not just as a bystander but through the work itself. Despite opportunities in larger cities, Marek chose to settle in Bishop out of his deep love for the Sierra Nevada mountains - trading urban convenience for clean air, open skies, and some of the most spectacular landscape in the country. Today, Marek tunes using a combination of an electronic tuning device and trained ear. He is comfortable in concert recital and recording studio settings, or your living room. Whether you play a Fazioli 278, a Steinway D, or an Acrosonic spinet, he's here to help - because we all need more music in our lives.
